I was raised in the remote Shasta-Trinity National Forest of Northern California. The solitude of my surroundings gave me ample opportunity for cultivating and sustaining a rich inner life, which is the impetus and inspiration for much of my artwork. Throughout my childhood I loved to draw and paint and when I discovered calligraphy at age eight it became an instant passion. I left Trinity County for the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where I initially studied music and then switched to history. After graduating I moved to Chico and studied graphic design at Chico State University where I took my first formal classes in calligraphy. In the mid-eighties I relocated to Austin where I joined the Capital City Scribes calligraphy guild and earned a masters degree in social work at the University of Texas at Austin. I spent several years as a therapist and social worker in crisis counseling, hospice and program development. I gave up social work when I had the opportunity to go to London with my family to study calligraphy at the University of Surrey Roehampton Institute. Following my return to Austin in 1998, I have pursued art full time, accepting commissions, producing and exhibiting personal art pieces, and teaching calligraphy, art and creative process in Austin, across the country, and in Canada.
