Artist’s Statement
My calligraphy is a dance of embodiment, requiring full breath and mindfulness--a balance of body mind, and spirit. Less interested in well-behaved writing marching along in straight lines, I allow my letters to cavort and dance along the page or canvas, moving and swaying to their own rhythm.

It is a quest for freedom that motivates me to submit to the discipline of formal calligraphy, and then move beyond it. I seek to combine lettering, drawing and painting in an organic way, one flowing easily into the other. My passion for nature and the repetitive lines I see within it--like tree branches or bark, in sand dunes and mountain ridges, in the curves of my own body-- inspires me to create my own personal lines or scripts which weave through my drawings and paintings. Words come and go in my head and then appear on the page or painting surface, along with phrases of songs, poetry and prose.

The power of dreams and the unconscious influence my approach to making art, which is intuitive, improvisational. What emerges in a piece is often a surprise, the result of trusting a vague image or idea that develops through the process of one mark or phrase or color responding to each other on the canvas or page. My art does not declare itself loudly, but whispers and sings and gently entices, drawing the viewer in for a closer look.
