Artist’s Statement
I have always loved the act of writing: writing text, writing words (calligraphy), writing letters (communication). I began to take my passion seriously when in 1997 I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to study calligraphy in London, at the Roehampton Institute. In addition to formal penmanship and the particulars of the art and craft of lettering, I was exposed to a community of exceptional people who changed the course of my life. There I was asked to consider “what I wanted to say, how I wanted to say it and Why I wanted to say it!” In response to these questions, I have explored themes in my art such as the persecution of women as witches in Western History, women and body image, contemplative writing, abstract expressionism and spirituality.
Calligraphy, I have come to realize, is my “Way”—a practice through which all my interests are integrated and expressed: literature, psychology, music, history, spirituality, nature, dance, and drawing. The work of Jung—the unconscious— in particular has been influential in my approach to creating, which is largely intuitive and improvisational. Artists like Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Goldsworthy are further inspiration for my explorations in calligraphic expression.
